Weekend Fuel 9th Oct

Fancy a movie night this Saturday? Need a TV show to binge on a quiet Sunday? Maybe you want a new game to play? Well, we may have something that could help give your weekend a much-needed pick-me-up with our Weekend Fuel! We’ve compiled a list of movies, tv shows and games that might be worth checking out over the next few days.

Films

Becky

(Available on Digital Platforms)

Becky

If you’re looking to get your thrills in this month ahead of Halloween, how about giving this home invasion thriller a try on home digital release? Becky (Lulu Wilson), a rebellious teenager tries to reconnect with her father (Joel McHale) during a weekend getaway. But any chance of repairing their family ties goes out the window when a group of convicts invade their residence. However, Becky is very happy to fight back – and fight back viciously.

The real attention grabber here is that our vicious convicts are lead by Kevin James. Yes, him of King of Queens and Will Smith romantic comedy Hitch! James is a regular in most Adam Sandler films so to see him ditch the laughs to bring terrors makes this film a curious must watch.

Hubie Halloween

(Available to stream now on Netflix)

Hubie Halloween

Netflix and Adam Sandler are back making comedy movies again and they’ve come together for a slice of Halloween family fun with Hubie Halloween.

Sandler plays the titular Hubie, a hometown local who makes sure the residents of Salem celebrate the ghoulish holiday safely and by the rules. Suffice to say, he’s not the most favourite person in town. However, things for this year’s Halloween festivities become problematic when Hubie is frightened by an escaped criminal and a suspicious new brand new neighbour. Doesn’t help that the locals are disappearing too, does it? Hubie has to conquer his fears and convince the police and his fellow residents that the monsters that spooking up the neighbourhood are real….very, very, real.

Oh, and Kevin James is also here….again.

David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet

(Available to stream at Netflix and select cinema locations)

David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet

Nature documentary legend, Sir David Attenborough reflects on the defining moments of his career in the Netflix produced documentary film. At the time of writing, you can also catch the film in select cinemas across the country as well as the Netflix streaming platform.

A Life On Our Planet not only looks at Attenborough’s career but also shares the naturalist’s experience witnessing devasting changes to wildlife and the environment. The film tackles the challenges life on Earth faces as the documentary offers potential solutions to help save our planet from disaster.

For any nature documentary fan, this is a must-watch.

Akira

(Now screening at standard and IMAX cinemas)

The most noticeable cinema release, or re-release, in this case, is Manga UK’s brand new 4K presentation of Akira; the seminal cyberpunk anime classic. The world of Neo-Toyko has been stunningly restored and available for the first time in IMAX formats.

Despite the unfortunate temporary closures of Cineworld cinemas, other chains like Showcase Cinemas, Odeon and Vue are still open and screening the anime throughout the week.

We’ve touched on the film itself in this week’s Ferocious 5 which can be read here. We highly recommend catching this legendary film if you can do so safely – especially in the IMAX format.

Despite the unfortunate temporary closures of Cineworld cinemas, other chains like Showcase Cinemas, Odeon and Vue are still open and screening the anime – so if you’re able to visit your local cinema safely, don’t pass up the chance to see this seminal classic in IMAX. The sound mix is incredible!
